Our Painted Wooden Camel is a vintage piece that has been handcrafted by master artisans in Rajasthan, India. It features a camel atop a solid wood base and a distressed, painted finish with colorful markings. It is believed to be a representation of the camels native to the area, where a wild population roams in Jaisalmer, a World Heritage Site in the heart of the Thar Desert.
Elsewhere in Rajasthan, a town named Pushkar is home to an annual festival where more than 11,000 camels gather to celebrate the Pushkar Ka Mela, or Camel Fair. The annual 5-day camel and livestock fair attracts thousands of people who journey from all over India and the world.
The camel is the icon of the desert in India and part of its cultural identity. They are considered to be the lifeline of desert people and a vital component of the economy in arid rural areas. Different than their counterparts in other parts of the world, these single humped dromedaries have a long, curved neck, big eyes and elongated eyelashes.
We love that this figure has a story to tell about the significance of camels in Rajasthani culture. It makes for a darling and chic addition to any bookshelf, desk, or child’s room.
