This Rwanda Basket has been handwoven by a women’s cooperative in Rwanda using locally sourced sisal fibers, raffia grass and natural dyes. Baskets carry heavy symbolism in Rwanda, where they are given to friends to celebrate life’s great events, such as weddings, births and other celebrations. Baskets are proudly displayed in Rwandan homes as symbols of the wealth of friends and family.
Each basket is hand-made using a complex and meticulous process that produces vibrant colors and intricate designs. The artisan crafts each piece by hand, using a needle and thread to wrap hand-dyed strands of sisal around bunches of sweetgrass. The result is a tightly coiled, durable basket that takes several days to complete.
Our baskets are a modern way to add a little global chic to a kitchen counter, coffee table or desk. Every purchase directly supports our partner organization in Rwanda that provides training and fair wage jobs to promote sustainable and scalable opportunities for their cooperative of women weavers in rural villages.
Each basket is approximately 12” long and 3” tall. Due to their handmade nature, each basket shows a minimal amount of design variation that tells the story of its origin and maker. No two are exactly alike.
Wipe clean with a damp cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners or chemicals. Please handle with care.
