Our 100% baby alpaca throw hails from Peru. Alpacas are members of the South American camelid family which also includes llamas, guanacos and vicunas. They are indigenous to the highlands of the Andes where their breeding is a vital component of the economy for a large sector of the population. Alpacas are prized for their natural, luxurious, silky, soft and durable fiber that is biodegradable and hypoallergenic.
Alpacas are bred especially for their fiber. They are natural vegetarians and graze on vegetation typically found on high altitude moorlands. Fewer than one alpaca exists per acre; their impact on the environment is therefore minimal. No harm is caused to the alpacas during the sheering process, which occurs only once every 12 months. After the fiber is collected it is hand sorted into grades by a cooperative of highly trained women. The very finest grade is called “baby alpaca,” which is reserved for our lightweight and warm throws.
Our alpaca throws are a luxuriously soft addition to your home or travel bag. Every purchase directly supports our artisan partners in Peru, who sustainably source and weave each throw for Meridian.
This 100% baby alpaca throw is 50” x 70” with a 3” fringe on each end.
Dry clean only.

Our lightweight throw is handwoven by a master weaver in Istanbul, Turkey. Using one of the oldest traditional pedal looms in the city, our partner works in a Fair Trade environment to produce throws and blankets using a blend of natural cotton and linen fibers.
The blanket’s soft texture and light yet sturdy weight lends itself to many uses, including a beach throw, picnic blanket, travel wrap, or a pretty accent for a sofa or chair.
Turkey has a long history with weaving high quality cloth with luxurious threads. In the old tradition, weaving centered around small villages across the country, each known for their own distinct style and patterns. Weaving was conducted in the home, and each home had a large loom set in a cavity within the floor of the living room.
These days, weaving production has moved to the big cities where many weavers use industrialized machinery to produce massive amounts of textiles a day. A few traditional weaving workshops still exist within the old city walls of Istanbul, however, but they are few and far between. Our lightweight throw comes from these special workshops, which are preserving the art of traditional Turkish weaving.
Each throw is made from a cotton/linen blend. It is approximately 37” W x 76” long plus a 2” fringe. Handmade in Turkey.
Machine wash in cold water. Delicate cycle recommended. Tumble dry low or line dry. Will get softer with every wash.
