Our adorable line of knit animals is made by hand in the Peruvian highlands by a Fair Trade women’s cooperative. Our partners provide the opportunity for artisans from farming communities to generate supplemental income by creating these cute and cuddly dolls. The organization also provides job training and technical support to grow their expertise, empowering the artisans for sustainable work.
Each precious animal has been knit, loomed, and embroidered by hand using locally sourced materials such as cotton and alpaca. After a prototype has been established by our partner’s master weaver and the Meridian development team, they share the pattern with the remote artisans in the Andes mountains. It takes about 2 full days on average to create one animal doll, which the women make using traditional knitting techniques that have been passed down through generations.
We use only the highest quality natural cotton yarns that have been hand-picked with our artisan team in Peru. Each knit animal is created with heirloom quality in mind; These safe and soft lovies will last a lifetime.

This Ugandan Heathered Basket has been handwoven by a Fair Trade women’s cooperative in Uganda using locally sourced sisal fibers, sweetgrass, raffia and organic dyes.
Each basket is crafted using a handmade process that produces vibrant colors and intricate designs. The artisan uses a needle and thread to wrap hand-dyed fibers into a tightly coiled, durable basket that takes several days to complete.
Our baskets are a modern way to add a little global chic to a kitchen counter or a shelf in any room. Every purchase directly supports our partner organization in Uganda that provides training and fair wage jobs to promote sustainable and scalable opportunities for their cooperative of women weavers in rural villages.

Blue and White Porcelain Pot - Double Happiness

Our Blue and White Porcelain Pot is handmade by a third-generation artisan family from the “Porcelain Capital” of China, where pottery has been produced for 1,700 years. Each step of the pot making process is done by hand, from sourcing and preparing the clay, to painting, and finally glazing each pot. While our pot is new, it has been painted in the antique style of traditional Chinese porcelain.
The first step in making a pot is to mix the clay by hand and foot. The creator stomps and molds the clay on a large mound until it is tender and ready. The clay is then shaped into the pot’s desired size. It is left to naturally air dry, which takes several weeks depending on the weather. After the pot has dried, our master artisans paint the desired outline with cobalt, then fill the pattern with natural colors. The pot is then fired in a high temperature kiln. The result is the finest quality porcelain that is completely handmade.
Our Double Happiness pot is decorated with the Chinese symbol for joy. Often the character is associated with the Lunar New Year celebrations and is also the symbol found all over the wedding ceremony, as well as on gifts for the bride and groom.

Recycled Glass Bead Strand - Tortoise Shell

Our strands of decorative, recycled glass beads are handmade by a fair trade cooperative of women artisans in Ghana whose entire process harnesses locally sourced and recycled materials. The rich history of beads in the region dates back to the ancient times when they were used as the King’s currency. Today, they are a vital part of the artisan economy.
To create each bead, the artisans use a rock to break apart glass bottles and grind them into a powder. The powder is then placed in clay molds and fired. Once the glass has melted into a liquid, they use a cassava leaf stem to poke a hole through the bead. The beads form as they cool before being polished with sand and water.
The colors chosen for each bead invoke specific meanings embedded by their creators; depending on the shade, beads can represent wealth, fertility, and purity. Strung together on a large strand, they are a unique and beautiful representation of a traditional Ghanian craft.
Our recycled glass bead strands are a colorful addition to any coffee table, bookshelf or bar cart. Every purchase directly supports our fair trade and environmentally friendly artisan cooperative in Ghana.

Our bead strand is approximately 11” long. Each handmade bead is about 1” in diameter and the strand contains anywhere from 31 to 37 individual beads. For decorative use only.
Each bead is handcrafted individually and slight variations in color, finish, size and shape may occur. Small amounts of wear and tear may be visible. These distinctions speak to the handmade process and tell the story of the artisan whose hands shaped it.
