Our Batonga Bowl has been handcrafted by a group of Fair Trade BaTonga women in Southern Zambia. This region is known for its intricate basket work, and there is a great diversity in the styles of weaving and patterns across the various districts and groups.
This Batonga Bowl, in particular, is a unique representation of basket craft because it showcases two different finishes. The outside of the bowl features a light-colored design in a horizontal weaving pattern. It is contrasted with the inside of the bowl, which features a dark geometric design. This double-thick weaving style takes extra time and skill to craft. The end result is a dense and sturdy basket that is almost twice as thick as a traditional plateau-style weaving.
This Batonga Basket Bowl is approximately 12” in diameter. Made of locally sourced ilala palm leaves in Zambia.
Each basket has been individually crafted by hand and no two are exactly alike. Designs may differ slightly from piece to piece. Variations in color, finish, size and shape may occur. Please Contact Us if you have any specific needs or questions.
