This Tonga Winnowing Basket has been handmade by Fair Trade BaTonga women in Southern Zambia, where they are known for their intricate basket work. Woven with natural fibers such as palm leaves and roots, this style of basket is traditionally used for carrying and winnowing grains.
The center of this basket begins with a coil, which the artisans wind together tightly enough to bare the weight of the basket’s contents. Using palm fibers that have been naturally dyed over several days, they twist and wind the weaving in a circular pattern over the root coils, creating a unique and natural design.
This Tonga Winnowing Basket is approximately 15” in diameter. Made of locally sourced ilala palm leaves and roots in Zambia.
Each basket has been individually crafted by hand and no two are exactly alike. Designs may differ slightly from piece to piece. Variations in color, finish, size and shape may occur. Please Contact Us if you have any specific needs or questions.
