This set of four coasters was handwoven by a women’s cooperative in Rwanda in the plateau basket style. Each coaster is woven using locally sourced sisal fibers, raffia grass and natural dyes. The bold burst pattern featured on the coaster design is known as the “hope” design as it stands for the country’s collective hope for a brighter future.
The complex and meticulous process to create each coaster produces vibrant colors and intricate designs. The artisan crafts each piece by hand, using a needle and thread to wrap hand-dyed strands of sisal around bunches of sweetgrass. The result is a tightly coiled, durable coaster that when grouped in a set takes several days to complete.
Our coasters are a modern way to add a little global chic to a coffee table, desk or bar cart. Every purchase directly supports our partner cooperative in Rwanda where over 200 women are trained in master level weaving, management and design skills.
Each coaster is approximately 4” in diameter. Due to the handmade nature of their creation process, each coaster shows a minimal amount of design variation that tells the story of its origin and maker. No two are exactly alike.
