Our Indigo Striped Pillow features a handmade, striped indigo panel from West Africa. Artisans in Burkina Faso hand dye, spin and weave cotton panels to create the indigo textile that has been prized for centuries for its vibrant, deep hue. One of nature’s rarest colors, indigo has long been one of the world’s most valued pigments. The technique to create indigo is a long, multi-step process that is passed down through generations with a decades long training period.
The cotton fabric is first handwoven on looms and then dyed using the leaves from the indigofera tinctoria plant. To create the dye, artisans grind the leaves into a pulp and then set them out to dry in the hot sun for several days. After the leaf pulp has dried, it is mixed in a fermented ash and water solution to form a binder for the dye.
Each piece of indigo has a specific history to tell about cultural heritage and the artisan handmade process. Our pillow collection is a luxurious addition to your home, steeped in tradition and craftsmanship.
This pillow is 14” x 20” and comes stuffed with a removable down/feather insert enclosed by a brass zipper. The back side of the pillow features 100% Belgian linen sourced from a sustainable mill and our signature Meridian tag.
Our Indigo Striped Pillow contains an authentic and high quality piece of a textile from Burkina Faso. Due to its entirely handmade creation process, no two pillows are exactly the same. Minor imperfections may be visible that speak to the handmade process and tell the story of its creator.
All of our textiles are handcrafted using the finest natural materials. To prevent loosening the shape or weave of the vintage cloth, we recommend dry cleaning our pillow covers.
