Our Woven Palm Baskets are handmade by a cooperative of women artisans in Northern Zimbabwe. Using a locally sourced ilala palm, the weavers create each basket entirely by hand using a traditional weaving process.
To create the baskets, the artisans first harvest the ilala palm leaves in the bush surrounding their village. The leaves are then boiled to soften the stems before they are dyed with locally harvested bark and roots. They are left to air dry in the hot sun for several days. The artisans then take the dried leaves and weave them together. The center of each basket begins with a distinctive herringbone pattern that blends into a design inspired by nature. The baskets are finished with a raised rim.
The cooperative currently employs over 80 women artisans who have learned to weave from each other and their ancestors. Earnings are used to support their families as well as cover schooling fees for their children, two of which are in high school and aspire to become doctors.
Ilala palm baskets are used in Zimbabwe for serving fruit and gathering eggs. They are also given as a traditional wedding gift. We think they are a wonderful and practical gift, either as a serving basket or featured as a collection on the wall. Every purchase directly supports our artisan cooperative in Zimbabwe.

Our bone inlay box has been created by a family of master artisans in Rajasthan, India. Using a technique that has been passed down through multiple generations, each box is hand crafted in a meticulous and detailed process.
This beautiful black bone inlay box features a traditional botanical pattern. Adorned with intricately carved recycled and naturally occurring bone, it takes a team of individual artisans to create a single box. One artisan is responsible for hand carving each piece of bone into delicate leaf shapes. A second person affixes those pieces onto a wooden frame in the intricate pattern featured on the box. The third and final master artisan fills the outline of the pattern with colored resin to create the background. Additional team members sand and seal the box before it is complete.
We’re in love with the stunning contrast between the intricate floral pattern and the dark resin background. Our bone inlay box makes a great place to stash jewelry, remote controls or office essentials. Every purchase directly supports our artisan partners in India.
This box is approximately 14”L x 9”W 4”H.

Our Chiapas Pillow collection is made using woven wool textiles created by master artisans in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. Each textile has been handwoven on a backstrap loom by a mother and adult daughter team that have been weaving for multiple generations. They learned to weave from their elders and tell us that “weaving and family are the two things that keep [them] going” and “the reason [they] are alive.”
Our artisan partners are masters at weaving on a backstrap loom. This type of loom gets its name from the way it is attached to the weaver’s body. At one end, the artisan ties the bottom of the loom around her lower back using a wide leather belt. On the other end of the loom, the weaver attaches it to a fixed and sturdy object such as a tree.
Our partners create each textile panel from scratch: They gather the wool, clean and card it by hand, and use a handheld drop spindle to spin the yarns into delicate threads. They then weave the wool on the backstrap loom. Each textile panel takes 8 to 10 days to produce and yields just three pillows. The design features the textile’s subtle and natural blend of handspun, undyed ivory wool.
Our Chiapas Pillow is a perfect neutral and textural accent for a sofa, chair, or bed. Every purchase directly benefits our artisan partners in Chiapas, Mexico.
This pillow is 20”x20” and comes stuffed with a removable down/feather insert enclosed by a brass zipper. The back side of our pillow features 100% Belgian linen sourced from a sustainable mill and our signature Meridian tag.
Our Chiapas Pillow features an authentic, handmade textile from Mexico. Due to its entirely handmade creation process, no two pillows are exactly the same. Minor imperfections may be visible that speak to the handmade process and tell the story of its creator, adding to the character and patina of each piece.
All of our textiles are handcrafted using the finest natural materials. To prevent loosening the shape or weave of the cloth, we recommend dry cleaning our pillow covers.
