Our Kerala Pillow has been handwoven on a manual loom by Fair Trade physically challenged artisans in Northern India. Made of pure organic cotton, artisans are trained to enhance each piece with a complex, raised pattern that conveys the beauty and uniqueness of hand loomed textiles.
Weaving on a hand-operated loom is one of the oldest methods of textile production in India. Hand weaving involves interlocking a set of vertical threads (known as the warp) with a set of horizontal threads (the weft), as well as meticulous planning and complex estimation. To create this pillow, artisans use two different color threads.
The artisans who create the Kerala Pillow benefit from being members of a small weaving unit led by a non-profit organization. The work offers them steady employment, life skills training and an avenue for financial independence.
This pillow is 20” x 20” and comes stuffed with a removable down/feather insert enclosed by an invisible zipper. The back side of the pillow features the same original textile.
Our Kerla Pillow contains an authentic and high quality piece of a textile from India. Due to its entirely handmade creation process, no two pillows are exactly the same. Minor imperfections may be visible that speak to the handmade process and tell the story of its creator.
All of our textiles are handcrafted using the finest natural materials. To prevent loosening the shape or weave of the vintage cloth, we recommend dry cleaning our pillow covers.
